But things still felt a bit uneasy when the Sooners faced third-and-8 from the Baylor 34. Lincoln Riley did what he'd been doing all drive long and fed freshman running back Trey Sermon the ball. Sermon broke free for a clear first down and kept going, shaking off safety Taion Sells at the 20 and finishing off a 34-yard touchdown run. Sermon's scored put the Sooners up 42-31, giving them some breathing room in what was a tighter-than-expected game. Wide open drop Early in the second half, Baylor was moving the ball on the Sooners steadily. The Bears had converted on two third downs already on the drive and had not only a third conversion but a seemingly wide-open touchdown set up when Zach Smith lofted a pass toward John Lovett with no Oklahoma defender in any position to stop him before he reached the end zone from 24 yards out. But the ball tipped off Lovett's hands and fell incomplete, instead bringing up fourth down. The Bears tied it a play later and eventually took a three-point lead but the points they left on the field due to the drop changed the complexion of the rest of the game. Mayfield settles down and delivers Jeff Badet had been largely absent since bobbling a kickoff return late in the first quarter. Baker Mayfield had been anything but absent, playing a rollercoaster-like game with his share of highs but also some inconsistencies that showed up after the Sooners had built a quick lead. Mayfield was in one of those lows when he was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty late in the third quarter, pushing Oklahoma back near midfield instead of giving them the ball at the Baylor 33. But on the very next play after the penalty, Badet went in motion and darted upfield after finishing out wide and broke free behind the defense and Mayfield hit him in stride for a 48-yard touchdown catch that put the Sooners up 35-31.
