Joy-Ann Reid, the managing editor of TheGrio.com and a MSNBC contributor, blasted House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Monday for saying his budget plan included the repeal of Obamacare. “Paul Ryan is essentially proposing to balance the budget in ten years, his previous draconian budget did so in something like forty, so in order to meet this new ideological purity test, which is austerity at all costs, budget balancing, this new sort of fetish on the right, he has decided to take a meat axe not only to Medicare” but also to Obamacare, she remarked. MSNBC host Chris Matthews remarked that by including the repeal of Obamacare in his budget, Ryan made it politically necessary for Republicans to support the plan. “If he or she, Republican, vote against it, they’ll be accused of supporting Obamacare,” he explained. Ryan’s plan would balance the budget within 10 years by partially privatizing Medicare, cutting assistance programs for the poor, and reducing federal contributions to Medicaid. “Paul Ryan’s ideology is not about cutting the deficit,” Reid claimed.
