By Chris CasteelU.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin can no longer appear in ads for his plumbing company or continue his home improvement radio show, the House Ethics Committee said Friday while mostly absolving the Oklahoma Republican after a five-year review. The committee, composed of Republican and Democratic members of the House, rejected concerns from the outside Office of Congressional Ethics that Mullin may have violated House rules and federal law by accepting more than $600,000 in earned income from his plumbing company, well above the $27,000 limit for House members. The Office of Congressional Ethics, which is authorized under the law to investigate complaints against lawmakers and make referrals to the House ethics committee, also alleged that Mullin “may have violated House rules and standards of conduct by being personally involved in endorsing services pursuant to outside employment.”The Office of Congressional Ethics made its referral to the ethics committee in late 2013.In its report on Friday, the ethics committee gave Mullin credit for seeking its advice after he was first elected in 2012 about the involvement he could maintain with his plumbing company.“To the extent that Representative Mullin substantially complied with the Committee’s advice, it would be inequitable to subject his conduct to additional review,” the report released Friday states.Mullin did make an “accounting error’’ and wrongfully received $40,000 from the company in 2013, according to the report.“The money was paid into a joint account held by both Representative Mullin and his spouse, the rightful payee,” the report states.Read more on NewsOK.com
