CHICAGO — Ernie Terrell, whose brief reign as heavyweight champion ended with a punishing loss to Muhammad Ali in a 1967 grudge match, has died.
The son of Mississippi sharecroppers and long-time Chicago resident worked as a fight promoter after his boxing career ended and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.
Andrew Bogut and David Lee were in another room getting medical treatment.
Stephen Curry had his tweaked left ankle in a tub of ice water, Draymond Green had a catcher’s-mitt-sized bandage on his right thumb, and the mask that protects Harrison Barnes’ broken nose lay on the locker-room floor.
“I think, more than anything, our guys are just tired,” said Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who gave his team a day off Friday and will start Saturday’s practice late to extend the rest period.
The Warriors won four of five games against Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Memphis and Oklahoma City — teams that have a combined record of 84-44 (.656 winning percentage) — and maintained the NBA’s best record (22-3) during the difficult stretch.
“We’ve played well (on the road), but to be home, kind of relax a little bit, get back to practice and fine-tune some stuff, it’s going to be a good time,” Curry said.
The Warriors haven’t had a break this long since Nov.

If you’re looking for help with your real starting lineup conundrums, read on.
Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons at Saints:
Even if Julio Jones (hip) isn’t on the field, Ryan will take full advantage of New Orleans’ generous secondary with the other options at his disposal.
Facing a weak Browns run defense (that Jeremy Hill torched last week) and a Manziel-led offense that’s struggling to stay on the field, even Stewart can’t screw this one up.
Fred Jackson, RB, Bills at Raiders:
Factoring in his production as a receiver and his nose for the end zone, F-Jax can be trusted in the Black Hole.
Call it a hunch, or just a great matchup, but LaFell ends his modest scoring drought.
Just when it looked like Bill Belichick had settled on Blount as his workhorse, he let Jonas Gray out of the doghouse with 11 carries last week.
Blount still found the end zone against the Dolphins, but the going gets tougher Sunday against New York’s stingy run defenders.
Hopkins has been sitting out practice to nurse a wobbly ankle, but he’ll be in the starting lineup Sunday.
Lindley has never celebrated a touchdown among his 181 career passes.
Figure on the All-Star break for Andrew Bogut’s return.
getting through a sequence of best-of-seven series without Bogut — can’t happen.
Just a week ago, the Warriors had a top-four seeding as a realistic goal for the first time since the mid-’70s.
Dallas could wind up being the toughest opponent of all, thanks to the acquisition of the ultimate pass-first point guard, Rajon Rondo (although it says here the Warriors will continue to score at will against that team).
Not that it’s a top priority, but with Leandro Barbosa drifting in and out of effectiveness, who wouldn’t welcome Ray Allen as the backup shooting guard to play alongside Shaun Livingston?
In response to a Freedom of Information Act request from Jezebel and at least one other news outlet, the University of Virginia has released a series of emails between the school and Rolling Stone. The emails outline how the school dealt with media requests from reporter Sabrina Rubin Erdely, who wrote the magazine's widely read (and, later, very controversial and much-questioned ) story about a student named Jackie, who said she was gang raped at a frat party in 2012.
