Management of Persistent Air Leaks - CHEST
Once a chest tube is inserted, air bubbling into the chest drainage system indicates an air leak. The flow of air through the fistulous tract into the pleural space delays healing and inhibits lung expansion. Although a majority of pneumothoraces resolve with thoracostomy tube drainage, many continue days after the lung injury.

A pneumothorax (noo-moe-THOR-aks) is a collapsed lung. A pneumothorax occurs when air leaks into the space between your lung and chest wall. This air pushes on the outside of your lung and makes it collapse. A pneumothorax can be a complete lung collapse or a collapse of only a portion of the lung.
