Ajnala, in the Amritsar district (Punjab), witnessed a brutal massacre of the Indian sipahis during the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. The sipahis, who were of the 26th Native Infantry, stationed in Mian Mir, Lahore, were disarmed on May 13, 1857, following outbreaks across the army. But on July 30, they broke out into rebellion.
