Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Archaeological Site of Monte Albán
Monte Alban is the most important archaeological site of the Valley of Oaxaca. Inhabited over a period of 1,500 years by a succession of peoples – Olmecs, Zapotecs and Mixtecs – the terraces, dams, canals, pyramids and artificial mounds of Monte Albán were literally carved out of the mountain and are the symbols of a sacred topography.

Although never as large or powerful as the city of Teotihuacan, Monte Albán apparently had peaceful relations with its central Mexico neighbor. A Oaxaca barrio at Teotihuacan revealed the distinctive Zapotec ceramic forms.

Meaning & History. From the Roman cognomen Albanus, which meant "from Alba". Alba (from Latin albus "white") was the name of various places within the Roman Empire, including the city Alba Longa. This name was borne by Saint Alban, the first British martyr (4th century).

The hilltop location of Monte Albán was a defensive one and warrior imagery is extensive at the site. Building L, located on the western edge of the plaza, features carved stone slabs with images of naked, sometimes mutilated figures. Accompanying hieroglyphs probably name the figures, as well as towns conquered by Monte Albán’s rulers.
