Worked example: average rate of change from graph
One you could say the net change has been 0. And any interval over which the net change has been 0 also tells you that the average rate of change is going to be 0. So you could view that the average rate of change is really the slope of the line that connects the two endpoints of your interval.
Introduction to average rate of change (video) | Khan Academy
The average rate of change takes two points and calculates (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1). It's not really accurate for the actual rate of change at the first point, though. So by bringing the second point closer and closer to the first point, we get closer and closer to the actual rate of change at that first point.
1.3: The Average Rate of Change of a Function
Summary. For a function f defined on an interval [a, b], the average rate of change of f on [a, b] is the quantity. AV [ a, b] = f(b) − f(a) b − a. The value of AV [ a, b] = f ( b) − f ( a) b − a tells us how much the function rises or falls, on average, for each additional unit we move to the right on the graph.
Average Rate of Change | Definition, Formula & Examples
The average rate of change describes how much one variable, on average, changes when compared to another variable. If the two variables are graphed on a plane, then the average rate of change...
