The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness – BWCA, protected as a true American wilderness, has changed little since the glaciers melted. Canoeing and fishing opportunities are nearly endless on the more than 2,000 lakes and streams found within the forest.

The BWCAW contains over 1,200 miles of canoe routes, 12 hiking trails and over 2,000 designated campsites. This area was set aside in 1926 to preserve its primitive character and made a part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1964 with subsequent legislation in 1978.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness ( BWCAW or BWCA) comprises 1,090,000 acres (440,000 ha) of pristine forests, glacial lakes, and streams in the Superior National Forest. Located entirely within the U.S. state of Minnesota at the Boundary Waters, the wilderness area is under the administration of the United States Forest Service.
