Coleman Alexander Young (May 24, 1918 – November 29, 1997) was an American politician who served as mayor of Detroit, Michigan from 1974 to 1994. Young was the first African-American mayor of Detroit. Young had emerged from the far-left element in Detroit, and moderated somewhat after his election as mayor.

The Colemans settled in the working class neighborhood of Black Bottom (East Detroit), where his father operated a dry cleaning business and his mother was a schoolteacher.

Five years later his family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he would go on to become one of the most noted leaders in the city’s history. Young graduated from Eastern High School and was offered a scholarship to the University of Michigan.
