Cornet. The cornet ( / ˈkɔːrnɪt /, [1] US: / kɔːrˈnɛt /) is a brass instrument similar to the trumpet but distinguished from it by its conical bore, more compact shape, and mellower tone quality. The most common cornet is a transposing instrument in B ♭. There is also a soprano cornet in E ♭ and cornets in A and C.

The cornett is a curved wind instrument made of wood and generally covered by leather. Its name was originally spelled with one t. Today it's spelled with a double t to distinguish it from "cornet," which is the name of an instrument played in brass bands. It was referred to as the cornetto in Italy and the zink in Germany.
