14.S: Fluid Mechanics (Summary) - Physics LibreTexts
Key Terms. Key Equations. Summary. 14.1 Fluids, Density, and Pressure. A fluid is a state of matter that yields to sideways or shearing forces. Liquids and gases are both fluids. Fluid statics is the physics of stationary fluids. Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance or object, defined as ρ = m V ρ = m V.

Fluid - Wikipedia
t. e. In physics, a fluid is a liquid, gas, or other material that may continuously move and deform ( flow) under an applied shear stress, or external force. [1] They have zero shear modulus, or, in simpler terms, are substances which cannot resist any shear force applied to them.
11.1 What Is a Fluid? - College Physics 2e | OpenStax
Liquids, gases, and plasmas are considered to be fluids because they yield to shearing forces, whereas solids resist them. Note that the extent to which fluids yield to shearing forces (and hence flow easily and quickly) depends on a quantity called the viscosity which is discussed in detail in Viscosity and Laminar Flow; Poiseuille’s Law .
Fluid | Definition, Models, Newtonian Fluids, Non-Newtonian ...
Fluid, any liquid or gas or generally any material that cannot sustain a tangential, or shearing, force when at rest and that undergoes a continuous change in shape when subjected to such a stress. A characteristic property of fluids is flow. Learn more about fluids, including various models.
