What is a Grevy’s zebra? The long-legged, endangered Grevy’s zebra is the largest of the wild equids. It is distinguished by its unique stripes, which are as distinctive as human fingerprints. Foals are brown with reddish-brown stripes, and gradually their coats darken to black.

The Grevy’s zebra is the largest of the three zebra species with the males five feet tall at the shoulders and weighing 770 to 990 pounds. Females are about 10 percent smaller. Now confined to northern Kenya and southern and eastern Ethiopia, Grevy's zebras have faced one of the greatest range reductions of any African mammal. They no longer live in Somalia, Eritrea and Djibouti, and may be gone from Sudan as well. There may be fewer than 2,500 Grevy's zebras in the wild.
