Hydrophobe - Wikipedia
In chemistry, hydrophobicity is the physical property of a molecule that is seemingly repelled from a mass of water (known as a hydrophobe ). [1] In contrast, hydrophiles are attracted to water. Hydrophobic molecules tend to be nonpolar and, thus, prefer other neutral molecules and nonpolar solvents.
Explained: Hydrophobic and hydrophilic - MIT News
Materials with a special affinity for water — those it spreads across, maximizing contact — are known as hydrophilic. Those that naturally repel water, causing droplets to form, are known as hydrophobic.
Hydrophobic - Definition and Examples | Biology Dictionary
Hydrophobic literally means “the fear of water”. Hydrophobic molecules and surfaces repel water. Hydrophobic liquids, such as oil, will separate from water. Hydrophobic molecules are usually nonpolar, meaning the atoms that make the molecule do not produce a static electric field.
The Hydrophobic Effects: Our Current Understanding - PMC
This review focuses on our current understanding on hydrophobic interactions, such as the dependence of hydrophobic interactions on the solute size, the directional natures of hydrophobic interactions, and the temperature effects on hydrophobic interactions.
Hydrophobic - Definition and Examples - Biology Online Dictionary
Biology definition: Hydrophobic means lacking an affinity for water; insoluble in water; repelling water. Examples of hydrophobic molecules include alkanes, oils, fats, and greasy substances in general. Compare: hydrophilic.
