Likelihood vs. Probability: What's the Difference? - Statology
Two terms that students often confuse in statistics are likelihood and probability. Here’s the difference in a nutshell: Probability refers to the chance that a particular outcome occurs based on the values of parameters in a model. Likelihood refers to how well a sample provides support for particular values of a parameter in a model.
What is the difference between "likelihood" and "probability"?
In non-technical parlance, "likelihood" is usually a synonym for "probability," but in statistical usage there is a clear distinction in perspective: the number that is the probability of some observed outcomes given a set of parameter values is regarded as the likelihood of the set of parameter values given the observed outcomes.
Likelihood function - Wikipedia
The likelihood function (often simply called the likelihood) is the joint probability mass (or probability density) of observed data viewed as a function of the parameters of a statistical model.
