Mauna Kea (/ ˌ m ɔː n ə ˈ k eɪ ə / or / ˌ m aʊ n ə ˈ k eɪ ə /; Hawaiian: [ˈmɐwnə ˈkɛə]; abbreviation for Mauna a Wākea) is an inactive shield volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi. Its peak is 4,207.3 m (13,803 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in Hawaii and second-highest peak of an island on Earth.

At 13,796 feet above sea level and over 33,000 feet from the bottom of the ocean floor, Mauna Kea is the tallest sea mountain in the world. Mauna Kea’s summit is home to the world’s largest observatory for optical, infrared and submillimeter astronomy.
