Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon - Wikipedia
A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon ( PAH) is a class of organic compounds that is composed of multiple aromatic rings. The simplest representative is naphthalene, having two aromatic rings, and the three-ring compounds anthracene and phenanthrene. PAHs are uncharged, non-polar and planar.
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) | Public Health Statement | ATSDR
PAHs are a group of chemicals that are formed during the incomplete burning of coal, oil, gas, wood, garbage, or other organic substances, such as tobacco and charbroiled meat. There are more than 100 different PAHs. PAHs generally occur as complex mixtures (for example, as part of combustion products such as soot), not as single compounds.
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Sources, Toxicity, and Remediation ...
Abstract. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread across the globe mainly due to long-term anthropogenic sources of pollution. The inherent properties of PAHs such as heterocyclic aromatic ring structures, hydrophobicity, and thermostability have made them recalcitrant and highly persistent in the environment.
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): What Health Effects Are ...
PAHs generally have a low degree of acute toxicity to humans. The most significant endpoint of PAH toxicity is cancer. Increased incidences of lung, skin, and bladder cancers are associated with occupational exposure to PAHs.
What Are Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)?
PAHs are a class of organic compounds produced by incomplete combustion or high-pressure processes. PAHs form when complex organic substances are exposed to high temperatures or pressures. Often, PAHs consist of three or more fused benzene rings containing only carbon and hydrogen ( Figure 1 ).
