Short-finned pilot whales have a mostly tropical and warm-temperate distribution which includes both nearshore and open-ocean waters. Long-finned pilot whales, on the other hand, are found in cool-temperate and sub-polar waters of the Southern Hemisphere but only the North Atlantic and Mediterranean in the Northern Hemisphere.
