Saint-Domingue. Map of Saint-Domingue, of 1789. Saint-Domingue was the name of a French colony on the island of Hispaniola. The colony existed from 1659 to 1804. In the Peace of Ryswick, the Spanish gave about a third of the island to the French. In 1804, the colony became independent, and took the name Haiti.
