Seeing the seafloor in high definition: Modern mapping offers ...
In most terrestrial locations, we can zoom in to see finer details, but the nearly 1.4 billion cubic kilometers of seawater on Earth make things trickier in the oceans. Three modern tools for collecting bathymetric data: satellite altimetry, hull-mounted multibeam sonar and underwater vehicle-mounted multibeam sonar.
Seafloor Mapping - NOAA Ocean Exploration
Sonar technology was developed in the 1920s and significantly improved seafloor mapping. Sonar systems emit a sound and then record the time it takes to receive an echo off the seafloor. Seafloor depth is calculated using the time difference from when the sounds are made to when the echoes are heard.
Sonar - Wikipedia
Sonar (sound navigation and ranging or sonic navigation and ranging) is a technique that uses sound propagation (usually underwater, as in submarine navigation) to navigate, measure distances , communicate with or detect objects on or under the surface of the water, such as other vessels.
Sea Floor Mapping - NOAA Ocean Exploration
Using Sonar. The first modern breakthrough in sea floor mapping came with the use of underwater sound projectors, called “sonar”, which was first used in World War I. By the 1920s, the Coast and Geodetic Survey (an ancestor of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Ocean Service) was using sonar to map deep water.
Multibeam Sonar - NOAA Ocean Exploration
Multibeam sonar is a type of active sonar system used to map the seafloor and detect objects in the water column or along the seafloor. The multiple physical sensors of the sonar – called a transducer array – send and receive sound pulses that map the seafloor or detect other objects.
