Thomas Smith was a seventeenth-century Anglo-American mariner and artist. He is the earliest painter in New England for whom a specific canvas can be—identified his self-portrait (fig. 1). Based on stylistic similarities to that painting, five additional surviving works have been attributed to Smith.
