NARRATOR: The typical thunderstorm cloud is the cumulonimbus, or thundercloud. Like many clouds, the cumulonimbus develops when warm air rises from the surface of the earth. As the warm air rises, it cools, and water vapor condenses into minute cloud droplets. In a thunderstorm, the updraft of warm air is rapid, and the cloud builds up quickly.
