Ytterbium is the 44th most abundant element in the Earth's crust. It is one of the more common rare earths, present at about 2.7 to 8 parts per million in the crust. It is common in the mineral monazite. 7 natural isotopes of ytterbium occur, plus at least 27 radioactive isotopes have been observed.

Ytterbium is a soft, malleable and ductile chemical element. In color when freshly prepared, it is less golden than cesium, but, more golden in color than just a "yellow-cast" as in metals like iridium. It is a rare-earth element, and it is readily dissolved by the strong mineral acids.

Ytterbium was one of nine new elements discovered in the mineral yttria at the end of the nineteenth century. Analyzing this mineral posed great difficulties for chemists of the time. The elements in yttria have very similar properties. That makes it difficult to separate them from each other.
