Nicholls Student, History Professor Visit Normandy

Nicholls senior Carleton Casey Jr. visited New Orleans and Normandy, France, with Paul Wilson, head of Nicholls' history department, from June 21-30 as part of Nicholls' newest study abroad program, the Normandy Academy 2014. Through the program, Nicholls partnered with the National World War II Museum in New Orleans to gain deeper insight into the 1944 events. During the intensive 10-day program, students spent two days and three nights at the World War II Museum and five days and six nights in Normandy. Casey, a 23-year-old Houma native, said he jumped at the opportunity upon realizing the trip would be held on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. While the program aims to expand students' knowledge of the war, Wilson said its mission is also intended to "enrich their experience as American by involving them in a study abroad program" and "introduce them to leadership concepts." The 15 participating high school and college students were from states that included Maryland, Illinois, California, Texas and Montana. Upon arriving in Normandy, the group visited several historic sites, including Omaha Beach, the Pegasus Bridge, the Grand Bunker Museum and the Normandy American Cemetery.
