By Randy Ellis Staff Writer rellis@oklahoman.comThe Oklahoma Commissioners of the Land Office distributed a record $102.2 million to Oklahoma's K-12 public schools throughout fiscal year 2016, the agency announced Friday. An additional $32.2 million was distributed to Oklahoma's higher education institutions, said Commission Secretary Harry Birdwell. Higher education distributions did not set a record, but were good considering that many of the lands managed for higher education are in the Oklahoma Panhandle, where revenues are closely tied to oil and gas leases and production, he said. The $102.2 million that public schools received during the fiscal year that ended Thursday was $5 million more than they received the previous year, while the money distributed to higher education institutions was $700,000 more than they received a year ago, Birdwell said. “Year after year, the CLO provides much-needed funds to public education,” said Joy Hofmeister, state superintendent of schools and a member of the commission's board.Read more on NewsOK.com
