Opening TD play wasn’t new Freshman Christian McCaffrey helped ignite the Stanford attack Saturday by gathering a short pass from Kevin Hogan, spinning away from a tackler and beating another to the goal line for a 42-yard touchdown in the opening minutes. The touchdown play might have been among the new wrinkles that head coach David Shaw used to open up the offense after last week’s shoddy performance against Arizona State. With the help of early blocks by McCaffrey and another freshman, Terrence Alexander, Ty Montgomery went 50 yards on a punt-return touchdown, his second of the season. Guys did a good job of staying on their blocks. Punt returns aren’t always easy to block. After Oregon State blocked his punt in the third quarter, Stanford’s Ben Rhyne uncorked a 61-yarder on his next try, the longest of his career.
