For starters, can we pep it up a bit? I’ve noticed a trend of performing the pregame anthem as a sultry love ballad. Someone advised me not to hurry, so I sounded like a guy who overslept and didn’t have time to stop at Starbucks before his first harmonica lesson. Carlos Santana, with his wife on drums, at a recent Warriors game, that was a keeper. [...] unless you’ve got an SSB for the ages, bring it home under two minutes. [...] can we lighten up on the seemingly mandatory playing of “God Bless America” in the seventh-inning stretch of every major-league game? Is the patriotism we built up during the pregame anthem sagging to half staff and in need of a midgame pick-me-up? How about if we mix in the occasional alternative American-themed tune, like Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” or Neil Young’s “Let’s Roll”?
