The committee has sent out a series of mailers suggesting that because the online communications company that Chiu co-founded, Grassroots Enterprise, did some contract work with the Republican Party, that he is antichoice, against same-sex marriage and a climate-change denier. Next up is the committee funded by tech investors Reid Hoffman and Ron Conway, who have raised nearly $600,000 this year and are busy sending out mailers attacking Campos for his vote to keep Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi on the job (that part is true) and for his “$20 million taxpayer giveaway to Big Oil.” The mailer is focusing on an ongoing fight at City Hall over whether San Francisco should offer its residents the option of a clean energy program that would topple Pacific Gas & Electric Co.’s decades-long monopoly on the city’s power market. In addition to linking Campos to a now-defunct deal, it conflates Shell Energy North America, the company’s energy and natural gas division, with its parent company, Shell, quoting headlines about the company’s involvement in Arctic drilling and accusations it fueled violence in Nigeria by paying off rival militant gangs.
