In the run-up to Tuesday's sentencing of Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump and his allies seemed to be convinced that the former national security adviser would stand up in court and renounce the plea deal he had agreed to more than a year ago in which he admitted lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russian officials during the presidential transition in late 2016.
