The Portland Police Department has instituted a new policy for all patrol officers to carry Narcan, the drug that blocks the effects of opioid overdose. Police Chief Michael Sauschuck says the policy is a direct response to the opioid epidemic in Portland. Every regularly assigned patrol officer has been trained to properly administer the drug. “Since the beginning of the year, we’ve been working on a three-pronged strategy to fight addiction by increasing our educational efforts, community awareness and facilitating treatment through our Law Enforcement Addiction Advocacy Program,” Sauschuck said in a prepared statement.
