“Post-punk” works, as far as labels go, for the new Calgary, Alberta, band Viet Cong. Viet Cong, which is now a full-fledged band with Michael Wallace on drums and Danny Christiansen on guitar, released their first, self-titled LP in January to critical acclaim. Music website Pitchfork gave it their “Best New Music” stamp of approval, the press has been nonstop, and the group’s shows — including the one they’ll be playing March 5 at Rickshaw Stop — are selling out. While the band’s sound is more streamlined when compared to their first EP “Cassette” — I feel like we actually were more cohesive as a band. If anything, the most obvious thread throughout the album may be its theme, referenced on the cover (a black-and-white image of bandages being snipped off a hand) and in many of the lyrics. Flegel’s last band, Women, which included Wallace on the drums, went on hiatus after an onstage fight broke out between Flegel and his brother Patrick Flegel, also in the band. [...] in February 2012, Women’s guitarist and vocalist Christopher Reimer died. The mood throughout the album matches the theme, heavy and, at times, hypnotic. The last reference is especially obvious in the songs like “Death” and “March of Progress,” both of which run longer (“Death” clocks in at over 11 minutes) and include distinct movements.
