The Wooly West By Andrew Gulliford (Texas A&M University Press) The conflict between cattlemen and sheepmen is a staple of western stories. In fact, the violence was even worse than depicted in literature and film. Murder and sheep killing were not uncommon. In 1909, cowboys in Garfield County tied up herders, then spent eight hours clubbing, chopping and shooting sheep.  In 1920, cowboys in Moffat County murdered a herder and clubbed to death 686 ewes. “The Wooly West” is an intriguing history of sheep-raising in Colorado and adjacent states.  Colorado author Andrew Gulliford writes of the Greek and Basque herders who came west to tend the sheep.
