JOHNSON CITY — If your church hasn’t registered for Adoration 2018, now is the time to do so. The second-year worship event, which will be held Sunday at East Tennessee State University, is seeking to unite 1,000 churches to achieve a common goal: restoring Appalachia from the prescription drug epidemic. Thomas Cook, founder and director of Adoration, said that while the group might fall short of its 1,000-church goal this year, support for the event remains strong. “(The fact that) these churches and these leaders are coming together to celebrate a common purpose and a common cause is really humbling and really exciting,” Cook said. What is Adoration? Organized by a group of local young adults and college students, Adoration 2018 is a daylong worship event that will include prayer, music, speakers and more. Each church will leave the event with connections and resources, Cook said, which will help them combat the drug epidemic in their communities. As of Tuesday, more than 170 churches had signed upt, Cook said, some of which are located as far away as Ohio, Delaware and Mississippi. “We’re a little bit less than we wanted, but last year we had about 100 or so sign up in the last week,” Cook said.
