The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF) have long been empowered with the right to file liens and issue levies against a taxpayer’s property to satisfy delinquent tax debt. Beginning in 2013, the DTF added an additional weapon to its arsenal: the power to suspend driver’s licenses for taxpayers whose state tax debt exceeds $10,000.
