The BlackBerry Classic, with its signature physical keyboard, is a throwback device that harkens to a long-gone golden age when the CrackBerry was king. The Classic would also be a good upgrade to older BlackBerrys like the Bold 9900, especially for business users who just want the basics like texting, e-mail, documents, Facebook, Twitter and maps. The tool belt duplicates functions available on the touch screen, so it’s probably more of a security blanket for die-hard BlackBerry fans. With landscape mode, other smartphones display video or games using the full screen. [...] these days, every other digital video display, including big-screen TV monitors, use a rectangular 16:9 aspect ratio. Because of its square shape, the Classic’s display is stuck in the old days when TVs had a 4:3 aspect ratio. BlackBerry hopes the intentionally nostalgic Classic phone will bring back some of the company’s old smartphone market share. [...] last week, research firm IDC said Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS phones commanded 96.3 percent of all smartphone shipments in 2014, close to “total domination.” [...] Google last week served notice that it was serious about taking over the market for smartphones used in businesses, maybe the last bastion of BlackBerry users.
