Herb Sendek says his Santa Clara team will play “really up-tempo, fastbreak basketball.” During a recent interview at the Leavey Center, Sendek — who replaced Kerry Keating as the Broncos’ head coach in late March — was asked a two-part question, in essence: Who is Herb Sendek and, in a best-case scenario, what type of team would he have? “I’ve coached many different styles,” Sendek said, depending on our school, where the program was, our personnel — a lot of variables to consider. [...] in the most general sense as we start here at Santa Clara … we’re going to be a team that reads and reacts, hopefully knows how to play, as opposed to a team that is fastened by a lot of set plays. The “Who is Herb Sendek?” question wasn’t quite as easily answered by the former Miami (Ohio), North Carolina State and Arizona State head coach. “Any one of us has a number of complexities to who we are,” Sendek said, and we can be different, depending on the setting and the circumstances. Sometimes, I think, I’ve been portrayed in a certain light based on my sideline demeanor or a postgame press conference.
