Recovery time is usually a couple of days, but Gray had a high fever and he will have lost some weight, so the A’s haven’t pinpointed a day for him to return to the rotation. Chris Bassitt, who allowed only one run in five innings while filling in for Gray on three days’ rest Tuesday, will remain with the team in case he is needed for Sunday’s start against Seattle. Gray is expected to make the American League All-Star team and he is considered a strong option to start the game in Cincinnati, but that now might depend on when he goes back into the rotation. Should Gray wind up pitching the final game before the All-Star break, he would not pitch in the All-Star Game, though he would be a member of the team and would partake in all pregame festivities.
