Shared Belief, the 3-to-10 favorite making his first start outside of California, was injured and had to be pulled up about halfway through the Grade 2 $1.45 million Charles Town Classic won by Moreno on Saturday in West Virginia. Trained and co-owned by Jerry Hollendorfer, Shared Belief stumbled at the start of the three-turn race on the three-quarter-mile oval and was in next-to-last place in the field of nine before jockey Mike Smith stopped him. The stifle is a joint comparable to a human knee on the upper part of a horse’s leg. Shared Belief, who trains at Golden Gate Fields between races, went into the Charles Town Classic with 10 wins in 11 starts and was widely considered America’s best thoroughbred. Moreno had finished second — 4½ lengths behind Shared Belief — in the Santa Anita Handicap on March 7, but he set a Charles Town Racecourse track record of 1 minute, 48.81 seconds in winning Saturday’s 11/8-mile race by 2 lengths over defending champion Imperative. Going into Sunday’s final program of the Santa Anita winter-spring season, Hollendorfer is tied with Peter Miller for the training title with 33 winners apiece.
