An army of bright orange Off! cans stands guard against unwanted guests as a cool late summer breeze wends its way through the screened walls. When Radvanovsky takes the stage as the title character in "Norma" next week to open the San Francisco Opera's 2014-15 season, things will be less bucolic. In the 20 years since she won the Met auditions she has become known particularly for singing Verdi, a voice type that usually isn't nimble enough for the coloratura bel canto roles require. Instead of building up to a mad scene in the final act, the big aria comes in the first 30 minutes. For the rest of the opera, Norma is on stage and must vacillate between a fearsome priestess and a conflicted mother who decides the merciful thing to do is kill her secret children to spare them living with their father. When she needs to take a break from Norma's seething rage and filicidal thoughts, Radvanovsky likes to drive fast and eat cheese. The roads around the house are great for driving and Radvanovsky's eyes light up at the prospect. When asked to explain the appeal of watching people drive in circles all afternoon, Radvanovsky replied, "It's the speed and precision and the expertise of the driver and how smart they are when they zig or zag or get out of situations." Radvanovsky has also been offered a Broadway musical but, due to the way opera productions are booked, doesn't have six months free until after 2019. Passion for cheesePerhaps more interesting is her outing this past season singing "The Four Last Songs" with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. "People are trying twisting my arm to do some things in German," she says coyly.
