OAKLAND, Calif. -- Texas Legends center Jameel Warney will be named the USA Basketball male athlete of the year on Friday, according to a source.The 6-9, 260-pound Warney was named the MVP of the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 after averaging 12.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He had 21 points and seven rebounds in the gold medal win over host Argentina.Warney, who will be honored Friday night at the Legends' game against the Oklahoma City Blue at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco, has averaged 19.1 points and 9.5 rebounds in 12 games for the Legends.While the product of Stony Brook has never appeared in an NBA regular-season game, Warney has been in NBA summer league camps and training camps the last two years with the Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers.The USA Basketball award is considered one of the highest in international basketball.Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony won it in 2016 for their roles on the U.S.
