Drivers in the vicinity of the 75-vehicle pile-up on Interstate 95 were speeding an average of at least 10 miles over the posted limit at the time of the crash, according to data compiled by the Maine Department of Transportation. Because of winter conditions, the posted speed limit on the highway was 45 miles per hour, indicated on flashing variable speed signs posted at intervals along the roadway. But despite the warning, the average speed of the 333 drivers headed northbound near Newport was 62 mph, according to data recorded at the sign posted at mile 159, near Newport.
