Spider-Man could have appeared in Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the deal with Sony wasn't struck in time. Spoilers follow. Age of Ultron ends with Captain America starting to train a new team of Avengers that includes The Vision, Scarlet Witch, War Machine, and Falcon. As director Joss Whedon explained on the Empire Film Podcast (via SlashFilm), he wanted to include two more characters.
