SACRAMENTO — An elderly gent with an orange polo shirt and faded yellow cap listened intently to a post-race interview with St. Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda senior Cooper Teare after his latest attempt to break the 4-minute mile Saturday at American River College. Cooper, who fell just short at 4 minutes, 1.29 seconds, talked about the heat and the much-too-quick 57.5 seconds first lap and said he was slightly disappointed because more than 50 friends and family had made the trek to see him make some history. All at once, the gent, with a quivering voice, interrupted and asked if Teare, an Oregon signee, will be running at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., next month. Teare said he’s been inundated with greetings from Oregon backers, especially after the runner broke a 41-year-old Arcadia Invitational 3,200-meter record last month (8:41.46) and, two weeks ago, ran the 10th fastest mile in prep history, again barely missing the sub-4-minute mark, in winning at the Mt. Sacramento Meet of Champions director Jerry Colman wanted to give Teare another shot to break it, so he extended the normal 1,600-meter race a bit to make it a mile. [...] he went 57.5, 61.5 and 63, putting him at 3:02 heading into the final lap. A enthusiastic crowd of about 1,000 fans roared their approval throughout the race and after. Teare, the national 3,200 leader, said he’ll take the next couple weeks off from racing and reset my training a little.
