NEW FAIRFIELD — The beach at Squantz Pond State Park will be left unguarded at least two days a week, owing to state budget cuts. After its budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 was reduced by $10 million, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced $1.8 million in spending cuts at many of the state’s campgrounds, beaches, museums and nature centers. “Our plan is designed to reduce expenses while providing the highest quality outdoor recreation opportunities for the public and ensuring public safety,” said DEEP Commissioner Robert Klee in a statement. Klee said department officials will continue to look for ways to save money and expect to take additional cost-cutting steps next spring.
