PHOENIX (AP) — A monsoon storm hit the Phoenix area that slowed air travel and caused flash flooding that stranded motorists. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Maricopa County. The storm moved in around sundown with high winds, lightning and heavy rain. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport says the storm forced a halt to takeoffs and landings for more than an hour. Officials say it also damaged the roof of a terminal, and part of the Sky Train's operation was suspended because of water on tracks. Meanwhile, fire officials say crews throughout Phoenix responded to numerous calls. Those calls included flash flooding on roadways that prompted the rescue of numerous stranded motorists. Other problems involved widespread car crashes and reports of downed power lines. Meteorologists reported that the storm was capable of producing wind gusts up to 50 mph.Read more on NewsOK.com
