Strong storms blew through the Savannah area on Saturday night, bringing heavy rain and hurricane-force winds to the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. According to Steve Rowley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, S.C., the airport reported 81 mph wind gusts around 9 p.m. Saturday. Winds are classified as hurricane strength at 74 mph. The airport reported 2.94 inches of rainfall — just shy of the record for April 25 of 2.98 inches set in 1982. “Not everyone had hurricane-force winds, but many areas, including Tybee Island, had gusts of about 60 mph,” Rowley said. “We had a lot of damage reports come in.
