How does a head coach talk up an opponent that has scored the fewest points in the NFL, allowed the fourth-most points and has the league’s worst point differential? The Giants head coach began his news conference Wednesday with the New York media with an opening statement on the 49ers, who will visit MetLife Stadium on Sunday night. Coughlin didn’t have great material, but the NFL’s oldest (69) and third-longest tenured head coach (12 seasons) was largely up to the task. Coughlin began by noting the first thing he does when examining an opponent is “to look at special teams.” The 49ers special teams include rookie punter Bradley Pinion (21st in the NFL in net average) and they rank 20th in punt-return average and 24th in kickoff-return average. “And then their special teams outfit, as I mentioned, a young punter-kickoff guy (Bradley Pinion) that has kicked the ball out of the end zone 85 percent of the time -- the kid they drafted out from Clemson, a fifth round pick out of Clemson,” Coughlin said. Coughlin did make an indirect reference to the 49ers’ offensive woes (10 points and 18 first downs in their past two games) and seemed to suggest it was because their opponents hadn’t shared the football. Carlos Hyde is a legitimate, outstanding football player as a rusher -- Outstanding receiving corps, Anquan Boldin, we all know the physical football player that he is. [...] they are a talented offensive football team, they’ve done a lot of good things. The two outside backers, (Aaron) Lynch and (Ahmad) Brooks, are outstanding football players.
