KINGSPORT – A two-mile long sidewalk down Wilcox Drive from the Kingsport Aquatic Center to the Riverview neighborhood is finally complete. Crews have left, the barriers are gone and all that's left to do is install some hand rails. Though it's taken more than four years to complete, the promise has been fulfilled. History behind the sidewalk In the lead up to the construction of the aquatic center, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen promised a sidewalk would be built down Wilcox Drive, from the Riverview community to the indoor/outdoor swimming facility. The impetus behind the sidewalk was that some type of walking and biking path needed to exist along Wilcox Drive to the aquatic center, given that some children and adults routinely walked and biked to the old Legion Pool from nearby neighborhoods. Most of the new sidewalk was built a few years ago and while a path existed across the sluice and Holston bridges, city officials planned to build something safer across the two bridges. The latest section The new sidewalk across the two bridges is 7-foot-wide and raised, allowing for two-way bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
