Overnight ratings up for first night

Preliminary estimates show that Saturday night's NBC telecast scored the highest ratings for the first evening of an Olympics competition outside of the United States. The Nielsen company said Sunday that its measurement of the nation's largest cities showed ratings for the Olympics telecast were up 8 percent over opening night in Beijing four years ago. A fuller measurement of viewership is expected later on Sunday.

The Olympics opening ceremony was seen in the U.S. by 40.7 million people, making it the most-watched opening ceremony for a summer or winter Olympics.

 

‘Game of Thrones’ second season finale attracts more than 4 million

Sunday’s second-season finale of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” clocked 4.2 million viewers at 9 p.m.  – 1.2 million ahead of the first-season finale crowd of 3 mil. At 4.2 million, the “GoT” episode’s 9 p.m. telecast was on par in the hour with ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” (4.3 million), CBS’s “The Good Wife” rerun (4.6 million), and ahead of Fox’s repeats of “Family Guy” and “American Dad” (3.6 million), while running behind NBC’s “Miss USA Pageant (5.8 million).

CBS procedural repeats and FOX's broadcast of the first "Iron Man" film led the way on a rather sluggish post-holiday Friday night. Among adults 18-49, FOX averaged a 1.2 rating, tops in the key demographic. The other networks were close behind with ABC's 1.1 rating and the 1.0 ratings for CBS and NBC. The CW averaged a 0.4 rating for the night.
