Amazon.com Inc has approached media companies with a proposal for a subscription service that gives users unlimited access to some television shows and movies over the Internet in a bid to rival Netflix Inc, two people familiar with the talks said on Tuesday.

The mail order and online video service maintains blistering growth, with profits to match.

Surprising no one, really, streaming video maven Netflix will roll out its online TV and movie rental service to North America's nearly 10 million PlayStation 3 owners in November. Sony will announce the deal later today in an action that knocks one of the Xbox 360's "exclusive" pillars out from under Microsoft's games platform.

One big story today is that Netflix added ABC content to its streaming service (it actually did this a couple days ago when episodes of Lost started appearing).
